Valentine's Day Post Script

Foodie break to describe Valentine's Day dinner a few days ago. Since going veggie, it has been harder finding interesting food when going out on Kauai. We cancelled our fancy dinner plans when I discovered the vegetarian tasting menu would be pea soup or salad and (ho hum) mushroom risotto for $55 per person. Instead, we drove up to Duane's Ono-Char Burgers in Anahola. They'll make vegetarian Boca burgers in any of their styles, so I had that version of my old favorite, the Island Girl and my husband Nick had the Boca teriyaki burger.
We then drove back south to park at Kealia Beach*, to chow down while we watched the surfers. Turned out to be a great Valentine's Day.
(*Kealia, by the way, is now on the cinematic map, being the spot where George Clooney turns inland to his view his family's pristine property in The Descendants.)

In order to make the white highlights on white flowers stand out, I'll need to darken all the whites, and yet try to keep them from looking muddy or dead. I think these may look bad for a while until they start looking better again.

They're a bit raucous, but also amusing to look at, with superhero yellow eyepatches to match their yellow legs and beaks. They're also the most skittish of beggars, always flying away at my approach when other birds hold their ground to see what crumbs I scatter. These sketches are from some photos I took on a morning walk in Kauai. They'd never stay still long enough for detailed drawings like these.

Today, I have to share the stop-motion video made by my son-in-law Sean Ohlenkamp, with the assistance of my daughter Lisa and about 25 volunteers. The video was shot over four all-night sessions while the Toronto bookstore, Type, was closed. Many hours of editing followed. I hope you--and book lovers everywhere--will enjoy this.

Dog Repair

Mice got into this stuffed dog, a prototype I designed to present to a toy manufacturer years ago. If it had been a stuffed pillow, I would have tossed it in the garbage, but this guy looked so sad I ran him through the washer and dryer and repaired him. He still has a few loose threads, but I hope that just gives him character.

I didn't paint today, but I did go through a lot of old files, and I came across this silly sketch.

I'm combing through years' worth of files of old work, and I've been a bit unsettled by how much work I did that I forgot about completely. I also couldn't help but see how much more we all rely on the computer for presentations, rather than slow, detailed pencil sketches. Computer-based art is slicker and more accurate, but I wonder if something's lost, too, from skipping the painstaking drawing.

I've barely had time to paint all week, but I scanned a detail of the rooster's feathers that I've been working on. The lighter feathers are only half finished, and the darker feathers will be detailed more, too.

If it doesn't look like much progress since the last post, that's because there isn't. After a day and a half of work, I painted out the left side of the fabric. When something isn't working, sometimes it's best to paint things out and start over rather than fight it. Everything needs to be refined now, but I think I at least have the folds where I want them.

The fabric is turning out to be way more difficult to paint than I imagined. Because there are no hard edges, just subtle folds and shadows, the gradations are critical to get just so. So far, the right side is way more finished than the left.

This was an exercise in patience. The hardest part was to keep the greens from getting muddled or indistinct where they overlapped. It was also a challenge to make the flowers greenish but still lighter than the leaves, but not so light they'd be too flat. I think I'll stop fussing now.

I love the fans of leaves and greenish flowers of hellebores. I also like that some varieties bloom in my garden during the bleaker months. I guess that's why it gets the common name Christmas Rose. This one is from a photo I took at Casa Loma in Toronto last year, and I thought it would give me a chance to try out my new green pencils.

Last December when I was in Varanasi, India, I stood near a raised platform next to a woman selling a few dusty items from her tarp on the ground. I was talking to my friend, oblivious, when I felt the woman tug at my pant leg. Without understanding a word between us, she pulled a clean tarp from her basket and motioned that I should spread it on the platform so I could sit without getting dirty. She asked nothing in return.

I was so stunned it took me until I saw her again to purchase a few of her string bracelets, to remind myself such open kindness exists, even from the most destitute.

The one sketched here is attached to my laptop case, and it keeps me from getting too wrapped up in my own problems.

Ok, this is a lame post (both literally and figuratively, now that I think about it), but I thought I'd sketch what was in front of me: my post-op bandaged leg, with just two toes peeking out, after surgery August 2. I'll try to post more often, now that I can get to my newly-set-up "office" in my house, waiting for repaired tendons to heal. Anyone out there have experience with a posterior tendon transfer and calcaneal osteotomy?

In my drawing group this week, I photographed a few of our poses. Since our poses are normally short, I wanted more time to sketch some of them. Some of the group members were playing with drawing on colored paper with graphite and white pencils, so I took some paper home, worked with a photo as reference, and drew Steve Coleman (who you can read more about from an earlier blog post).

After drawing the white peony in colored pencil, I wanted to paint in watercolor again and use white flowers as a subject. I love the calm beauty of a white bouquet. This one uses flowers in my garden: iceberg roses, white hydrangea, and an odd white campanula. It also has tiny chartreuse flowers from lady's mantle, bright green grape leaves and a spiky white flower whose name I can never remember. I spent the first day sketching directly onto watercolor paper, and the second laying in the first color.

Colored Pencil Peony-Final

Shading in the petals was far more difficult in colored pencil than my usual watercolors. Getting darks required going over and over an area, pressing down hard on the pencils, while the lightest tints were a challenge to keep clean and bright. I don't think I'll be switching my preferred medium, but this exercise made me appreciate a good pencil drawing even more.

If you just held a petal from this peony in your hand, it would appear pale pink. In a drawing, though, I keep having to reach for darker and darker pencils to convey that paleness. I'm using ten different pinks, reds and purples to try to get a full tonal range.

After working in this medium, I can't say I prefer it to watercolor or acrylics, but colored pencils do present some interesting challenges--and I always have fun with those. I'm used to mixing my green paints with black or red to gray them down before I paint leaves. Many green colored pencils seem way too bright, and it's much harder to tone them down to what I want. On the other hand, shading spherical shapes is much easier with pencils than paint. Next, I'll have to try a flower in pencils.

I photographed a branch heavy with blueberries last summer. I also bought some colored pencils and have been looking for a subject to sketch with them. My inspiration is a book by an artist I met in Kauai, who was there to co-teach a seminar on botanical illustration at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens. The goat that I painted in the large Kauai painting (see March 16, 2011 post) deserved to be painted again in greater detail. Here he is on a 20 x 20-inch canvas.

Cotswolds Bouquet

More Memory Lane. As I went through an old travel folder, I found this sketch of a bouquet, there to greet us in a house we rented in the Costswolds in 1997. The unusual mix of colors made me think at first that the flowers and leaves were artificial.
